Co-Curating with the Latah County Historical Society-What There Wasn't- 4th Grade Project

Mr. Zach visited the day before our field trip to talk about all types of research, how ideas are gathered, and the idea of curating. He was helping them understand all the parts that go into an exhibition.

Transcribed notes and original handwriting we showed the kids under the document camera. These are examples of what the kids will use in research and the big reminder that all the things they are touching and studying are from real people, from a real time, and think about the story of that person's life.
Here is the actual (photocopied cursive diary) and the transcribed of a lady that talked about pioneer life.

From Archive.org-- A pioneer wagon with items for a family's trip.
We discussed the things and wondered about the family's choices.

Not cataloged yet, a deck of cards in a leather case in a box captured the attention of several of us.

Up the hill from downtown- LCHS Annex is our destination and the house is the background. The kids were excited to be able to see the items they will choose to pack for their trip overland on the Oregon Trail.

In the Textile Room with the older clothes-- 1880s to 1930s

Everything is tagged with as much information as possible. That is how our story will start in figuring out more about the object, textile, or document. There are over 100,000 items in this building!

Mr. Zach explaining how the textiles are organized, how to protect them. The kids took down observations about what they saw. They asked questions and they saw that there were more women's clothes than men's.

2nd Room of Textiles- 1940s forward. The clothes were very different and Mr. Zach explained how the fabrics are printed on instead of the designs woven in the materials. The kids did a great job noticing the hat boxes above and we also learned that the Annex used to be a place of 7 apartments and that is why there is a sink in the back of this room and  stairway that leads nowhere as the house has been retrofitted to house all the things collected.

We take up a lot of space with our backpacks. The kids filled this room too and took notes. When we come back, they will be divided up into smaller groups to work together. This was the big tour!

Down the stairs to the basement and we spent the longest time here because there were so many interesting items. Mr. Zach is standing in front of one of the tool closets. He pulled out all kinds of different types of things- pick ax, logging shoes, different saws. The kids saw things all over to be cataloged and organized, reorganized and each needs a space.
